It was 10 pm when she pulled in. She asked me to look in the carrier and see if the little one was still alive. She was [te.rr.ifi.ed] it has already [pa.ss.ed] and couldn’t bear to check herself. She had witnessed the kit get [h.i.t] by a car.
The kit wasn’t responsive, but I was able to confirm that she was, indeed, still breathing.
Kim Cook, our realtor and animal care taker volunteer, was still here bottle feeding baby raccoons when I had asked her if she could stay even later to help me triage a fox.

At the same time, “Upton Animal Control” would capture the orphaned fox kit we had been trying to capture earlier in the day. It also required care and assessment. Team member Steven was willing to do the drive to meet him despite the fact that we had both been doing rescue work since early in the morning.
So it was game on…
Kim and I worked hard to stabilize the first kit while Steven was off to get the second.
It was midnight by the time Steven got back with the second kit. The first kit had been treated and was stable in an incubator.

The three of us should have been asleep hours ago, just like the animal control officer in Upton and the finder of the fox that had been [h.i.t], but none of us were. We all did what was necessary.
No one complained. Everyone just made it happen for the betterment of these two young and [innocent] lives.
And moments like this are a reminder of humanity – of how much good still exists in this world when people choose to care.
Thank you so much for your dedication and tireless efforts to protect and heal the many creatures who suffer mostly due to humans. Indeed there are many who care and go out of their way to help others, be they human or other living beings.
